Mother’s day is a special day for both mothers and children! Rather than simply buying a gift, wrapping and presenting it, why not work together with the children to prepare something special. Many schools also work on preparing gifts for mothers on this memorable day. Besides traditional cards, there are many other possibilities and ideas that can be made into lovely gifts with a little time and effort. Younger children will require close supervision and assistance; they might end up being more of a “helper” as an adult does most of the work. Older kids can make more advanced crafts that involve more detailed planning and creativity, they may even wish to keep what they are working on a secret. Below are a few ideas.
Customized pillow cases. These can easily be made with a simple embroidery pattern guide. Embroidered designs can include an endearing message and/or other patterns such as hearts and flowers.
Personalized clock. Buy a simple analog clock. Pop the cover off the front and remove the hands. Place a special photograph or other art design on the front, gluing it into place. Replace the hands and front cover, and it’s ready! Note: Remove the clock battery before removing the hands; a good idea is to synchronize the hands to a single position before removing them, to insure the clock keeps time when it is reassembled.
Decorate a picture frame with artwork, seashells, shiny stones, ribbon, or other tidbits. Place a favorite photo inside and its all set.
Decorate a flower pot by gluing dried flowers, photo cutouts, ribbons, glitter, or other small decorative items around it, then plant a small plant or flower such as a miniature rose bush inside.
Gather an assortment of soap bars of different colors and fragrances, carve them out making a variety of miniature soap bars of different shapes, and place them in an appropriate sized glass jar.
Decorate candles by melting colored crayons over the
sides, with a little effort, candles can also be melted down and reshaped.
